A big WIN this week – I’ve been cutting back on the sweets THANKFULLY.  Also, about three weeks ago I helped a man with his groceries (three full carts) because he was struggling.  The entire time he never said a word, not even “Thank You” –

I walked away thinking he was an a-hole.

A few days ago at the same store a woman approached me and said they had been looking for me for the last few weeks.  That man was her husband, and he is quite sick and unable to speak but he was so touched by my help that he drew me a picture to say – “Thank You”.  

That reminded me of how important the stories we tell ourselves are. 

I felt so bad for creating a story of him being the bad guy meanwhile he was fighting terminal illness and drawing ME a picture to express his GRATITUDE.  Where was mine?  If you can speak, breath and/or just read this – BE THANKFUL.

This week’s lesson: 10 ways to pay off your rentals in the first year?

The night the Titanic sank the two lookouts in the “crow’s nest” only had about 30 seconds between seeing the iceberg and collision.  Right next to them were binoculars that could’ve saved the ship, but they were locked away.  David Blair was a sailor who was supposed to work on the Titanic but was reassigned off the ship at the last minute –

The keys to the binoculars were in his pocket.

After the Titanic disaster the Radio Act of 1912 was rushed through, requiring ships to have 24/7 radio access and battery backups so they would never miss a distress call.  Crew and passengers started listening to the radio for non emergencies and a new trend started.

It started with news programs, but advertisers wanted more.

For the first time there was a way to mass advertise without newspapers and suddenly audience demographics became much more important.  Soap manufacturers wanted to reach woman at home during the day so they created “soap operas” with addictive stories designed to sell soap.

Music was also revolutionized – then came the ADS

For the first time pioneers like George Squier’s company Muzak offered a paid service to consumers.  Skeptics said that nobody would pay for “something free” like radio but consumer demand was high for ad-free broadcasts.  The same thing happened with cable TV.

The same idea was then used by Netflix, Hulu, YouTube Red and many others.

Here’s my point: everything from radio, mass advertising, audience demographics, cable TV, today’s streaming services, etc. – these are all ripples from a very, VERY small wave – all of this happened as a result of one thing:

Without that one thing happening, nothing else happens the same way.  I LOVE history and reading how seemingly small things can have enormous impact.  The “Butterfly Effect” is alive and well and all around us, like W. Clement Stone said – little hinges swing big doors –

Brain Game of The Week.

These are great for “Fire the Dendrites” and they train your brain to work better with logic, communication, problem solving, pattern recognition, critical thinking, and decision making. These are used in IQ tests, job/admissions interviews, government recruitment programs, etc

Last week’s question:

100 politicians are at a party and they are in two groups; they are either crooked or honest.  At least one is honest.  However, if you select any two at least one of them is crooked.  Is there enough info here to know how many politicians at the party are crooked and how many are honest, if so how many of each?

Here’s the answer:

Remember the secret to critical thinking and problem solving is often restating the facts and/or question in simpler terms.  We are given two facts, first that there is at least ONE honest politician and second if you pick any two then at least one of them is crooked.  Imagine there were two honest politicians they COULD be be selected at random right?  That means there are less than two who are honest and we already know there is at least one.

So to restate the fact we would say “there are not two honest politicians in the room”.  The answer is  yes we do have enough information and there is one honest politician and 99 are crooked.  

Now here’s this week’s question:

Let’s say that you and I have the exact same amount of money in our pockets.  How much money do I need to give you in order for you to have $10 more than me?
