How to Calculate Change In Your Head In Seconds – Be a Human Cash Register?

Real estate investors and business should know how to math in your head, fast, because it will help you with every part of your business.  This is part three of our series on “Mental Math Shortcuts for Real Estate Investors and Business Owners” and in this class we’ll talk about calcuting change in your head in seconds like a human cash register.  This is fun and always impresses people.

How to calculate change quickly in your head?

How to calculate change quickly in your head and be a human cash register?

We will start with totals that are below $20, but this works the same no matter what.

Look at each number individually, first we’ll start with the dollar amount.

$4.57
$3.19
$7.84

Go up one number and ask yourself what do you have to add TO that number to get to the next round number and if necessary then again to the target amount.

So if the total is $4.57 and they pay with a $10 bill, the change will be $5… something.

Examples:

$2.84 = $7…

$5.63 = $4…

$11.76 = $8…

Understanding complements:
Numbers that add up to 10
1 + 9, 2 + 8, 3 + 7, 4 + 6, 5 + 5
REMEMBER THESE, we will use them often

Break and get that in your head.

Now the second number:

$4.57
$3.19
$7.84

Get this second number to 9 –

Ask yourself what do you need to add to that number to get to 9.

Examples:

$4.57 = $5.4…
$3.19 = $6.9…
$7.84 = $2.2…

Now the third and final number:

$4.57
$3.19
$7.84

Get this number to 10 – what do you need to add to this number to get to 10?

$4.57 = $5.43.
$3.19 = $6.91
$7.84 = $2.26

Examples:

Now do the whole thing:

$3.47 = 16.53
$6.48  = 13.52
$5.57 = 14.43

Remember to start SAYING the answer before you have it.

Tips:
Say the amounts out loud like you would to customer
LOOK at each number and take your time
SAY it as you figuring it out

When will you use this?
To impress people
To fire dendrites and expand Easy World
In situations where you have cash transactions

REMEMBER THE COMPLEMENTS.

Some more examples:

Customer pays with $20:

$13.58 = 6.42

$7.49 = from $10 $2.51, or from $20 = $12.51

$18.57 = $1.43
